This issue of ILLUMINATE reminds us of the people who work within our walls. While there is nothing that will do justice to the depth of the legacy left well beyond our Museum from our inaugural Director Dr Helen Light AM (may her memory forever be a blessing) we are ever so grateful to have Padmini Sebastian OAM speak of working with Helen, at a time when the Immigration Museum in Melbourne was in its most formative period.
The pages of this also edition reveal humour and inquisition, including an interpretation of HELMUT NEWTON: In Focus by Fashion and Photography students from RMIT. The essay by artist, author and broadcaster, Tai Snaith, brings in an appreciative focus on the role of Helmut's wife and muse, June (aka Alice Springs) and the award-winning photographer and author Ying Ang deconstructs notions of ‘contemporary ideas of fashion and desire’ in her thoughtful work, Piecemeal.
